The word ‘vessel’ describes a container, and as discussed, traditionally ceramics are used to contain food, liquids etc. However, as we have seen, the notion of the vessel can lead to works that will not be used in this way. They are more likely to be displayed and appreciated for their aesthetic qualities, and they constitute a particular genre within ceramics.
