Discussing the works in the Ceramic Contemporaries 4 exhibition

Knowledge and Understanding:
Vessel Forms
Here the clay seems to act like a canvas, and there is a sense in which these two pieces can be regarded as three-dimensional paintings. At the same time, they have been individually hand-built - not thrown on the wheel or slip cast - so that the clay retains a certain irregularity: it is not completely smooth. Even when coloured over, such peculiarities of surface recall the touch of the maker’s hand and add something to the work.
